Bolshoi ballet was an emphatic winner of the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown yesterday and has stamped his credentials on a shot at the Epsom Derby in June.

The Ballysax has a reputation for being a good early season Derby Trial and Bolshoi Ballet was trainer Aiden O’Brien’s eleventh winner of the race in just twenty-one years. Bolshoi Ballet’s sire the great Galileo was the first of the O’Brien winners back in 2001 and was quickly followed by High Chaparral who won both races in 2002. More recently the Dermot Weld trained Harzand went on to win both races in 2016.

Other notable winners of the Ballysax stakes include Irish Derby and Acot Gold Cup victor Fame and Glory and Rekindling who went on to win Australia’s premier race the Melbourne Gold Cup.

The bookmakers have reacted to Bolshoi Ballet winning the Ballysax Stakes by cutting his odds for the Derby at Epsom from 25/1 to around 11/1 and I wouldn’t put anyone off having a small antepost wager.
