Apprentice jockey Benoit de la Sayette has tested positive for metabolites of cocaine, the Professional Jockeys Association has announced
In a statement de la Sayette said:
“I cannot apologise enough for my actions, both in respect of taking cocaine and of misleading those around me. There are no excuses and I am sorry for letting down my family, the team at Clarehaven Stables, Gosden and my colleagues in the weighing room.”
De la Sayette has made an amazing start to his racing career with 12 winners from 49 rides. The highlight being his Lincoln win last month on Haqeeqy for trainer John Gosden., He described winning the Lincoln as “a dream come true, a fairytale”.
John Gosden employed Benoit de la Sayette last year, when he became the trainer’s first apprentice for 29 years. The trainer has announced that he will be supporting his apprentice appropriately.
De la Sayette began his riding career on the pony race circuit both in France and Britain where he was a leading rider.
