Ayr Gold Cup 2026: What 10 Years of Trends Tell Us – and My 1-2-3
Saturday 19 September, 3.40 Ayr (ITV3) – 6f Class 2 handicap, 25 runners, going Soft
The Ayr Gold Cup is one of the great cavalry charges of the Flat season: 25 sprinters, a wide-open handicap and a draw that can make or break your afternoon before the stalls open. It also has a habit of repeating itself. I’ve dug through ten years of data on the race – draw, ratings, market, fitness, age and more – to see where the winners really come from. Here’s what the numbers say, and how today’s field measures up.
1. The rating band that wins
If you take one thing from this post, take this: horses rated 101 or 102 have won 5 of the last 10 renewals from just 27 runners – a 19% and 18% strike rate respectively, and a combined profit of +54.5 points to level stakes.
Compare that with horses rated 103 to 107: 0 wins from 50 runners. The very top of the handicap simply has not been getting the job done. The sweet spot is the horse just below the top weights – good enough to be well-treated, not so good that it’s carrying the field.
2. The draw – avoid the inside, aim wide
Ayr’s soft-ground draw bias is well known, and the stats back it up:
- Stalls 1–3: 0 wins from 30 runners, just 5 places between them
- Stall 10: 0 wins, 0 places from 10 runners
- 5 of the last 10 winners were drawn 12 or higher
- Stalls 20, 21 and 24 are all profitable to follow
- Stall 13 has placed 5 times in 10 years – a 50% place rate
On soft ground, the stands’ side is where you want to be.
3. The market is more honest than you’d think
In a 25-runner handicap you’d expect chaos. Not here. The favourite has won 3 of the last 11 renewals (27%) and placed 55% of the time. The top three in the betting have supplied 5 of the 10 winners.
The 13/2 to 8/1 bracket is the real gold: 3 wins from 15 runners (20%), 47% placed, +10 points profit.
At the other end: horses sent off 14/1 or bigger are 3 from 166. Anything 50/1 or above is 0 from 31. Big-priced shocks are rare in this race – don’t go hunting for them.
4. Fitness and freshness
- 16–30 days since last run: 5 winners, +17.5 points
- 8–15 days: 0 wins from 48 runners – a quick turnaround is a red flag
- 61 days or more: 0 wins from 24
You want a horse that’s race-fit but not rushed – roughly three to four weeks off its last outing.
5. Recent form counts
6 of the 10 winners finished 1st, 2nd or 3rd last time out. Horses that were 2nd LTO have a 18% win rate and 45% place rate. Meanwhile, horses that finished 7th or worse last time have won just twice from around 130 attempts. Excuses don’t win the Ayr Gold Cup.
6. Age
8 of 10 winners were 4 or 5 years old. Six-year-olds and older are 2 from 93. Three-year-olds are 1 from 24. The classic profile is a progressive 4yo.
7. Other nuggets
- Horses that last ran at Goodwood are 3/24 – the best track pointer. Ascot last time is 0/30, York 1/44.
- 7 winners had run over 7f at some stage – stamina matters at Ayr, doubly so on soft ground.
- Weight: 9st 0lb–9st 1lb is 1 from 54; 9st 4lb is 0/13. The 9st 2lb and 9st 5lb marks have done well.
- Trainers: Karl Burke 1/7, Richard Spencer 1/4, William Haggas 1/4. Richard Fahey is 0/21 and Michael Dods 0/15.
The ideal profile
Put it all together and the ideal Ayr Gold Cup winner is a 4 or 5-year-old rated 101–102, drawn 12 or higher, running 16–30 days after finishing in the first three last time, priced between 13/2 and 12/1.
How today’s field measures up
| Horse | Odds | Stall | Age | OR | Wt | Days | LTO | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Binhareer (fav) | 4/1 | 2 | 4 | 103 | 9-5 | 63 | 4th | Fav stat and weight good – but stall 2, 63 days and OR103 are three big fails |
| Far Above Dream | 7/1 | 14 | 4 | 99 | 9-1 | 28 | 2nd | Odds bracket, draw, days, LTO, age all tick; top RPR. Only knock is 9-1 |
| Dance In The Storm | 8/1 | 8 | 4 | 99 | 9-1 | 28 | 4th | Decent fit, unexposed at 6f, has 7f form; York LTO a small negative |
| Flash Harry | 10/1 | 21 | 4 | 101 | 9-3 (5lb pen) | 20 | Won | OR101, stall 21, 20 days, Goodwood LTO – the best pure trend fit. Penalty the worry |
| Ardisia | 12/1 | 13 | 3 | 99 | 8-13 | 20 | 2nd | CD winner, loves soft, stall 13, Goodwood 2nd LTO; 3yo trend weak |
| Evening Saigon | 16/1 | 24 | 4 | 100 | 9-2 | 28 | 5th | Profitable stall 24, good weight band – each-way angle |
| Twilight Calls | 10/1 | 19 | 8 | 95 | 8-11 | 7 | 2nd | In form, but 8yo and stall 19 (0/9) |
| Tuco Salamanca | 11/1 | 12 | 4 | 106 | 9-8 | 42 | Won | OR106 and 9-8 both winless in 10 years |
| Two Tribes | 16/1 | 1 | 5 | 103 | 9-5 | 14 | 3rd | Stall 1 (0/10) plus 8–15 days (0/48) |
| Stratusnine | 20/1 | 6 | 4 | 104 | 9-6 | 28 | 6th | CD winner but OR104 and 9-6 both 0-for |
| Run Boy Run | 14/1 | 23 | 5 | 100 | 9-2 | 49 | — | Last year’s winner, out of form, stall 23 is 0/8 |
| Wiltshire, Aramram, Spycatcher, Volterra | 25–40/1 | — | 5–8 | 102–111 | 9-4+ | — | poor | Too much weight, too old, or too long off |
My 1-2-3
1. Far Above Dream (7/1) – Sits squarely in the 13/2–8/1 sweet spot, finished 2nd last time, drawn 14, runs 28 days after his last start, and is a 4-year-old with the top Racing Post Rating in the field. He ticks almost every box.
2. Flash Harry (10/1) – The OR101, wide-draw, Goodwood-form profile that has produced half of the last ten winners. The 5lb penalty for his last-time-out win is the only reason he isn’t top of the list.
3. Ardisia (12/1) – Course-and-distance winner, thrives on soft ground, drawn in the stall with the best place record in the race and was 2nd at Goodwood last time. The 3yo trend is against him, but he’s the ideal each-way play.
Reserve: Evening Saigon (16/1) from the profitable stall 24.
The one to oppose: Favourite Binhareer fails three of the strongest trends in the book – inside draw, 63 days off and a rating of 103. At 4/1 he’s the one I’m happy to take on.
Trends inform, they don’t predict. Ten years is a small sample and horses haven’t read the stats. Please bet responsibly – and if you’re following, follow with money you can afford to lose.
